Watercolor Classes -  Winter 2023

Explorations in Watercolor: (Only 2 spots Left)

This class is meant for anyone who wants to explore the wonders of this fluid medium. If you are a beginner this will be a good introduction. If you are a watercolorist but feel you are too tight and want to develop a more fluid style this class is for you. Even if you paint in other mediums, watercolor is a quick medium for developing a study for further development in your chosen medium. Class discussions will be about composition, values and color with a focus on adding light, depth and atmosphere to your paintings. Be prepared to let the paint flow and just have fun. Learn from my “bag of tricks” that will give you confidence in mastering this medium.

I teach by doing and have my students follow along. Class will be structured to complete 4-5 paintings in a 6 week session. As the class progresses I will transition into having students work independently on their own subject matter or from reference photos from my photo library.

Classes will be held in my Clinton studio with class size limited to 6 students. This way I can give individual attention to each student.

Class schedule: Saturday 9:00 am - 12 Noon, Jan 14, Jan 21, Jan 28, Feb 4, Feb 10, Feb 11 Cost: $270 for a 6 week session. Optional watercolor paint fee $30 (students must provide their own brushes and watercolor paper)

Watercolor as a Sketch Medium (sorry class is full)

Have you been disappointed with how your painting has turned out after hours of work, well so have I. The key to a good painting is evaluating your subject before starting to paint. This class will teach a method establishing  good design by doing simple studies and sketches. The masters used watercolor just for this purpose.  Watercolor and pencils will be used in class to produce a series of studies that will then be used for a homework assignment to complete a small painting in the medium of your choice for critique the next week.

Each week one student will pick a subject and reference photo of their choosing. The class as a group will then work on this subject to develop thumbnail sketches, value and color studies. Students have the option to send  by email their own reference photos or photos will be provided. Class discussions and demonstrations will be about composition, values and color with a focus on adding light, depth and atmosphere to your paintings.

A simple class materials list will be provided. For painters that are painting in other mediums watercolor paints can be provided for a fee.

Classes will be held in my Clinton studio with class size limited to 6 students, this provides a congenial atmosphere for discussion and learning from each other.
